Why Kids Need More Than Just Play
Kids are made to move. It’s in their DNA. But in a world where screens dominate and PE classes are shrinking, kids are moving less than ever before. And the consequences? Poor posture, low energy, and a growing gap in physical confidence.
The good news? The solution is simple: get kids moving in ways that are fun, engaging, and designed to set them up for life.
The Core to Extremity Principle: Building Strong, Capable Bodies
At Innerbloom, we focus on core to extremity movement—a foundational concept that teaches kids to generate power from their centre (core) and transfer it outward (to their limbs). Think about how babies first learn to move: they develop control of their midsection before they can crawl, stand, or walk. This pattern continues through life, and reinforcing it through functional training helps kids develop better strength, coordination, and injury resistance.
When kids learn to brace their core before lifting, jumping, or sprinting, they build a movement foundation that supports them in all sports, and in everyday life.
Functional Movements = Real-World Strength
We want kids to grow into strong, capable adults, and that starts with functional movement – the kind of movement they use in real life.
Rather than isolating muscles with machine based training (which doesn’t translate well to real world movement), we focus on:
- Squats → Building leg strength for jumping, running, and standing with good posture.
- Pressing & Pulling → Upper body strength for climbing, lifting, and carrying objects safely.
- Jumping & Landing → Enhancing coordination and power while preventing injuries.
- Loaded Carries → Teaching kids how to handle and move weight efficiently (think: carrying a school bag properly!).
These movements are scaled to their age and ability, ensuring that every child is challenged at the right level while having fun!
Nutrition & Movement Go Hand in Hand
Training kids to move well is only half the picture, fuelling them properly is just as important. Kids are not just “small adults” when it comes to nutrition. Their developing bodies need a balance of protein, healthy fats, and slow digesting carbohydrates to keep energy levels stable and support muscle growth.
Some simple tips:
- Start the day with protein and healthy fats instead of sugary cereals.
- Encourage water over sugary drinks to maintain focus and hydration.
- Make sure post exercise meals include a mix of carbs and protein to help recovery.
- Teach kids to recognise how food makes them feel, this builds lifelong awareness!
