Stay on Track This Holiday Season!

Summer is HERE! The holidays are HERE!

Christmas lights are up, calendars are packed, and festive food is everywhere. It’s such a fun, busy time of year, but let’s be honest: it’s also when our healthy habits tend to slip. I get it, I’ve been there too. But here’s the thing – staying on track doesn’t have to feel impossible, and it’s definitely not about being perfect.

It’s about showing up for yourself in small, manageable ways – because those little wins add up. Think of it as compiling interest. Even if you don’t see it, it’s there. The power of a habit far exceeds a burst of motivation to get fit (think new years resolutions!).

Below we’re going to dive into creating manageable momentum through this busy time of year without feeling like you’re sacrificing the joy of the season.

Make Training Non-Negotiable

Here’s a tip I’ve learned: if you want to stick with your workouts during the holidays, schedule them first. Treat them like any other appointment – your future self will thank you for it. It’s a non negotiable, it’s not something you have to decide!

It doesn’t have to be perfect, either.

If you’re tired or short on time, dial down the intensity. The point is to keep moving, even if it’s just 20 minutes of something simple. That’s maintaining the habit you’ve worked so hard for. You’ll feel so much better for it, and it’s a reminder that you’re someone who keeps showing up, no matter how busy life gets.

Smarter Swaps for Festive Treats

Let’s talk drinks because, honestly, who doesn’t love a good holiday cocktail? The trick is to make smarter choices so you can enjoy the celebrations without feeling sluggish later.

Think gin and soda instead of sugary cocktails or a low carb beers over your standard drink or champagne. And for every drink, sneak in a glass of water. Staying hydrated makes a huge difference – not just for how you feel that night but for how you recover the next day.

Festive Food Without the Overwhelm

Big family meals can feel like a free-for-all, but here’s a simple approach: fill your plate with protein and veggies first. Then, enjoy the other goodies in moderation. Craving dessert? Share it with someone. You still get to enjoy the flavours without overdoing it.

One thing I’ve learned is that it’s not about avoiding indulgent foods – it’s about enjoying them intentionally. Savour the moment, and then move on.

Stick to the Basics

Even during the busiest weeks, sticking to a few simple habits can help you feel in control:

  • Drink plenty of water. Seriously, this one is underrated, especially if you’re eating more sodium-rich foods.
  • Get good sleep. I know, easier said than done – but even small tweaks, like turning off your phone earlier, can make a difference. Try and aim for at least 7 hours! This is the most under-utilised form of fat loss!
  • Move every day. Even if it’s just a walk or a quick stretch session, staying active keeps you feeling energised.

These little habits are like anchors – they ground you when life feels chaotic.

A Reminder: It’s Not About Perfection

Here’s the thing: you’re not going to crush every workout or make the “perfect” food choices all season long – and that’s okay. What really matters is staying consistent enough that you keep the ball rolling.

Think about it this way: sticking to your habits when life is chaotic builds the kind of discipline that sticks with you. It’s proof that you can handle whatever comes your way – not just during the holidays, but all year round.
