Supplements: What Works, What Doesn’t, and What’s Just Expensive Wee

Let’s clear the air.

No supplement will save you if your sleep’s trash, your diet’s junk, and you haven’t trained since The Last Dance aired on Netflix.

But once you’ve got your actual health foundations sorted (training, food, water, sleep) there are a few smart supplements that punch well above their weight.

Let’s break them down, call out the BS, and glorify the ones worth your hard earned dollars.

1. Whey Protein: The GOAT

If you struggle to hit your daily protein (most people do), whey is hands down your best friend. It’s convenient, cost effective, and doesn’t taste like despair anymore (DM us for recommendations).

You’re not going to suddenly become Arnold because you chugged a shake. But you will recover better, maintain more lean mass, and stay fuller longer, especially helpful if you’re cutting.

Why it works:

  • It’s a complete protein – all essential amino acids ✔️
  • Rapidly digested post workout = better recovery
  • Helps support muscle retention while in a calorie deficit

Pro tip: 30 – 50g post workout or in meals where protein’s low. Brands don’t matter as much as ingredient labels. Skip the ones that read like a science experiment.

2. Creatine: The Most Studied Supplement on Earth

If supplements had a Hall of Fame, creatine would have a whole wing.

It boosts strength, helps with high intensity effort, and even improves cognitive function. No, it’s not a steroid. And no, you won’t “get bulky overnight.” Stop it.

Why it works:

  • Helps your body make more ATP = energy for short, explosive efforts (think lifting and sprinting)
  • Improves muscle hydration = better training output
  • Can support brain function, especially under fatigue

Dosage: 5g daily, any time of day. No need to “load.” No need to “cycle.”
Take it with water.

3. Fish Oil: Like WD-40 for Your Body

Unless you’re smashing sardines daily (you’re not), you’re probably low on omega-3s. Fish oil helps reduce inflammation, supports joint health, and helps to improve mood and brain function.

Basically, it’s like lube for your body, but in a more socially acceptable capsule.

Why it works:

  • EPA and DHA = anti inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids
  • Helps balance out the over abundance of omega-6 in modern diets
  • Can support brain and heart health

Watch out: Not all fish oils are equal. Look for:

  • High EPA + DHA per serving (at least 1,000mg total)
  • IFOS-certified or independently tested brands
  • Refrigerated = fresher = better

4. Magnesium: The Mineral You’re Probably Missing

Can’t sleep? Always cramping? Feel like you’ve been steamrolled post workout? You might be low on magnesium.

Stress, poor sleep, training, and coffee (yes, sorry) all chew through it. It’s vital for recovery, muscle relaxation, and better sleep.

Why it works:

  • Helps regulate muscle contractions and nerve function
  • Supports sleep by calming the nervous system
  • Plays a role in over 300 cellular processes (yep, it’s a big deal)

Form matters: Magnesium citrate, bisglycinate, or threonate > the cheap oxide kind that just sends you sprinting to the toilet.

The Supplement Hall of Shame

Here’s where your wallet suffers and your pee glows.

Fat burners: glorified caffeine pills. Just… move more and eat less junk.
BCAAs: if you’re getting enough protein, you probably don’t need these.
Testosterone boosters: unless you’re deficient (your doctor will tell you), they’re mostly bro science.
Detox teas and greens powders: Your liver already detoxes. Save your cash and eat real vegetables.

TL;DR (Too Lazy; Didn’t Read)

If you’ve got your basics nailed, here’s your Bluff Knoll of useful supps:

  • Whey protein: for recovery and hitting protein targets
  • Creatine: for strength, power, and brain health
  • Fish oil: for joints, heart, and inflammation
  • Magnesium: for sleep, stress, and recovery
